What’s with NeoDeo CDP and Da Vinci Grand Reference system? Can’t help asking because of wondering what expectations might be of this Lamm powered gear driving the X-2’s to their highest non-A/N capability? [And can’t help wondering about the Lamm sound because of your high praise in this cyberland holiday giftbasket (longhand for blog) of the Lamm gear.
Wait and see!!!! is an acceptable answer, but one can’t help but be curious in advance.
I wrote a few days ago about how I had a slight preference for laid-back sounds at shows – likely do to the aggressive sounds of many of the rooms [much better than it used to be several years ago]. The Lamm room fits this mold, being somewhat laid back and always ‘civilized’.
The NeoDeo has been in their room before. It isn’t horrible and it could be quite good. Hard to tell because the nature of some of the other components pulls a veil over some of the more interesting parts of the frequency spectrum.
The Kubala-Sosna cables tend to be laid back, especially in the treble areas.
The da Vinci turntables… there are only 2 turntables we’ve heard that sounded better than the rest: the Walker and the Clearaudio Statement [both of which have their issues :-)]. The rest have their minor pluses and minuses and we currently go for the best built, best designed, most elegant table: the Brinkmann. So this is all to say that I expect the da Vinci to be fairly decent, but not spectacular.
Our biggest concern about the Lamm room here is the Critical Mass Systems rack and amp stands. We haven’t published [yet] any of our shootouts here and elsewhere with competing products we do not sell – hard to see how it would come off well politically – but both this and Silent Running Audio (SRA) [and Grand Prix :-)] did not fare well against the HRS.
The Lamm is a wee bit on the mind side of the Mind-Heart spectrum, the AN a wee bit on the heart side [the AN is also somewhat tunable using different tubes]. I like both extremely well – and think a lot about exactly why this is, and why most other amps even exist at all, and about information flow in the high-end audio community and how easily it can be perverted [etc. etc. remind you of any other part of the modern global community? :-)]
Some people have serious preferences for one over the other. I expect you will like the Lamm room OK and will find it very interesting – they play mostly classical music along with some sophisticated jazz. However, the sound will not be as loud as it would be in real life :-).
