Revamping the Speakers Page in the Audiophile's Guide to the Galaxy
A lot of the Audiophile’s Guide needs a facelift – most especially the equipment racks and turntables, not to mention the categories that are still empty.
But the Speaker category is now down to 8 speaker manufacturers, and if it continues in the current direction it will be down to 6 the next time I get near it with the delete key…And one can forsee a future in which the last standing manufacturer gets the axe – all because the current approach is flawed in a number of ways:
-
It does not take into account that some speakers from a manufacturer are really much better than other speakers from the same manufacturer
It does not take into acount the different goals for a system, each separate goal possibly arriving at a different ‘best’ speaker.
It does not take into account room size and other possible constraints that affect the choice of ‘best speaker’
The new format will try to take these things into account by:
-
Listing speakers instead of just manufacturers
Adding categories to represent the different goals systems (people) have like ‘Impressive’, ‘Emotional’ etc.
Taking into account small, medium and large room sizes
Not sure how we are going to organize all this data yet. But we are working on it.
Then we can add manufacturers like Sonus Faber and MBL to the list of best speakers – as they do have privilaged places in the speaker world – with respect to very specific sonic goals – just not at the top of best of the ultimate.
Hello,
the ‘speaker catagory’ is very nicely done. i’m looking foward to its evolution. do you think it’s possible that you would add ‘second tier’ speakers that are in the lower price ranges. do you even listen to lower priced speakers? lol..
Hi Ben,
We have to stop meeting like this, people might start to talk … 🙂
Well, we will try to recommend multiple speakers in each category, but exactly what constitutes a “lower price range”?
Most of the manufactureres in the current list of top speakers do make speakers in the low thousands to 12 thousand or so that are really pretty good – though in the lower price ranges it is rare to find a *full-range* speaker that sounds any good.
Listen to lower priced speakers???? Me? Not if I have a choice – life is very short and one might as well enjoy it to its fullest now because it has a tendency to end before we are ready for it to.
Or are you just poking fun at my $500 Yamaha active pro monitors I have in my office? Yes, yes, I am trying to find time to upgrade them too… 🙂

AGI Model 511 preamp. Would anyone have any info or instructions for this Audio General Inc. preamplifier??
Hi Bill,
I have an AGI Model 511A preamp for sale on Ebay right now. You can see the specs listed. It comes with a manual of sorts. They didn’t have the manual ready when I bought it.
It’s a great sounding peice of equipment!
Sir, I need to service an AGI pre amp model 511. One of the resitors was badly heat damaged and impossible to make out the code. I would like to find the service specs for this pre-amp. From what I have seen on the web they made this model for 14 years. Someone out there in cyberland should be able to help me with this quest: Remember its all about V=IXR
Hi Michael,
Try posting your questions to AudioAsylum.com. Someone over on one of their forums should be able to help you.
Best of luck!
Mike

Why could I have come up with this spoof off of Hitchiker’s Guide??? Well done. Made me crack up and almost caused me to enter Zaphod as my name (or maybe Ford).

Hi Ixlam,
Sorry to read that you still have not gotten satisfaction. Thanks for posting about the situation.

No problem Mike ..
This Fraudster needs to be brought to justice!!,,
Who knows how many people he has stolen from.
He is still using e-bay as his store “front” ..
And I am still working working with them to get this guy charged.
(Police and Banks have also been alerted)
His silence speaks for its’ self.. If I were wrongly accusing him, you would think that he would step up and at least try to deffend himself, contact me, or make some kind of effort to rectify the situation ..
So once again a BIG HEADS UP !!! to anyone who has had any dealings or think to make purchases from this goof!
If anyone out there (police investigators etc.) are interested in more information about this this clown, let me know. I have no problem giving up his information for further scrutiny.

Hey Mike,
A long time ago I heard a story about a Japanese company that came to one of America’s speaker manufacturers to see how they manufactured their high-end speakers. After seeing what went into them they said there’s no way they could do it and keep costs low. My current living situation does not allow me to have loud speakers, so I’m temporarily into headphones! Keep up the good work.
