Pursuing the Ultimate Music Experiences

Audio Federation High-Fidelity Audio Blog

Digital Audio Pepsi Challenge

OK, here is the link: Proper Discord

It is a classical music site that has 3 clips of a piece of classical music recorded at various fidelities.

Now, we are supposed to listen to all 3 and see which one has the highest fidelity.

OK.

And we are listening to the on…. what?

A. The speaker built into our laptop or computer?

B. The $10 out-board speakers that we ordered with the computer [my default setup]?

B. Perhaps by routing the signal out the earphone jack into a Lexicon surround processor into a couple of active Yamaha speakers? [my other setup]?

The point is that the vast majority of people will answer A. Then take this test and will not be able to tell which is the highest fidelity. And this is supposed to show that people have no ears?

What it shows is that the people running the test have no concept or respect for the quality of audio playback equipment and what it means in terms of being able to hear the music with greater ability and insight.

Anyway, there is also a part 2 to the article, which I have not read – but the test is meaningless IMHO.

Newish Ultra High End Audio Forum

It is called, somewhat clearmindedly, the Ultra High End Forum.

http://www.ultrahighendforum.com

I haven’t spent much time there, but they do have a lot of photos from Axpona:

Axpona Stereophile Show 2010

As far as “I think they [Corona Plasma Drivers] mate better with [Lansche speaker] dynamic drivers than they [Acapella Plasma Tweeters] do with the Acapella horns.”… well, it’ll certainly make the Lansche people happy to hear that their hard work is going in the right direction. It is certainly a different ‘kind’ of mating… both plasma tweeters having to be ‘slowed down’ to the speed of the other drivers. Horns are, of course, faster and so more similar in this way to the plasma tweeters – but the Lansche 2-way we heard was certainly fairly nicely integrated, and it is nice to hear that it looks like the larger, and much more difficult 3-way is doing a good job as well [heck, 95% of speakers can’t integrate their own drivers from the same manufacturer very well, so…. :-)].

Wine Blogs and High End Audio Blogs

There is a little bit of a wee hissy fit by bloggers and ‘pro’ writers who write about wine.

Here is one article that kind of provides an overview:

Wannabe Wino

First, note that winos have 1000s of blogs while we audiophiles have maybe 10. You can take that to mean there are not many audiophiles, or that we are very passive and apathetic, or we are on average Luddites. [Think the 1st two explanations are close to the truth].

Second, what has bloggers all upset is that someone, a pro-writer [but this is really beside the point – something that the wine bloggers do not grok. It is really passionate and knowledgeable versus casual and novice… NOT old school writer versus bloggers… that ‘about’ was NOT talking about the blogger I linked to who seems to have quite a bit of experience and passion], pointed out that a lot of people are posting their opinions even though their breadth of experience is quite lacking. I.E. they really do not have any real perspective with which to determine and describe what a wine is like … or a piece of equipment sounds like!

And this last is certainly a pet peeve of mine – that many reviewers and most forums post reviews by people who have no clue what they are talking about. For example, how many times have you read ‘Best XZY that I have ever heard!!!’ and then checked out there previous reviews and associated equipment and find out that their system really sucks compared to the piece under review. That YOUR system is way better than theirs… and that YOU would have been able to hear a lot more into what the component can do than they did.

So why do people even read these reviews? Perhaps, as the linked to wine blogger indicated, it is mostly industry types who read them, and, unfortunately, people trying to make a quick buying decision using Google and reviews by anyone who can bang on the keys on a keyboard.

What those people trying to make a buying decision need is a way to rate the Reviewer. Lijit started with this idea, but has changed their business model more often than Fremer changed LPs. Vut the idea is to make a list of quality wine reviewers, quality high end audio reviewers, etc. somewhere so that the internet babel-verse makes some sense.

Working on kicking it up a notch…

[spending way too much time over at Mattters. Who knew I had a thing for Cats and I already knew I loved Indian Food and High End Audio of course. Anyway, a great time waster… [aka information resource] …]

Anyway, we have decided that Audio Fed needs a kick in the pants – so we making a big push to sell our demo gear [No price too low! But seriously, make an offer, we will be nice. We promise] and reposition the store as one of the leading establishments in the world [which it already is in many ways] and to do that we need to make some exciting changes.

No, I can’t tell you what they are : … Neli will kill me if I post them.

But we need to sell some of this great gear we have sitting here before we do anything – so if you have had an eye on something – but thought you should wait… well, now you should NOT wait because these kinds of opportunities only come once or twice.

Hey, so we’re impatient. What’s new? There are things we need to buy, and before that happens we need to sell some things.

So that makes us…. what do they call it… motivated sellers 🙂

Harmonic characteristics of the larger amps

[Yep, this blog was down yesterday morning – have no idea why except that it was not us who were responsible. One of the few times these days where I can pt fingers at someone else for a change! :-)]

Here is where we are currently with the dynamic side of things…

// MICRO < - less .... more ->
Soulution – McIntosh – BAT – CAT – VTL – ARC – Pass – Boulder – Krell – FM Acoustics – Spectral – Halcro – Vitus – MBL – Ayre – Sanders – Goldmund – Edge (early NL series)

// MIDI < - less .... more ->
VTL – BAT – CAT – ARC – McIntosh -Vitus – Edge – Sanders – Goldmund – FM Acoustics – Pass – Ayre – MBL – Spectral – Halcro -Krell – Soulution – Boulder

// MACRO < - less .... more ->
Spectral – Vitus – Edge – Ayre – Pass – CAT – Halcro – Sanders – Goldmund? – FM Acoustics – MBL – McIntosh – Krell – Soulution – ARC – Boulder – BAT – VTL

Let’s look at harmonics. We might want to think about this by looking a several aspects of harmonics: about harmonic color, purity and resolution? Guess I am kind of assuming that the amps are tonally accurate, otherwise… otherwise they probably shouldn’t even be on the list? Are all these amps really tonally accurate up and down the frequency spectrum?

Harmonic Color: amount of harmonics (opposite of ‘lean sounding’):

// COLOR < - less .... more -> FIRST PASS at this list – there WILL BE CHANGES
Krell – VTL – ARC – FM Acoustics – Pass – Boulder – Vitus – CAT – BAT – Soulution – Halcro – Goldmund – Spectral Sanders – Edge – Ayre – MBL – McIntosh

Harmonic Purity: lack of contamination of fundamental harmonic with other odd and bizarre harmonics (i.e. a tuning fork compared to a steel barrel – they might both primarily resonate at the same harmonic, but… one is purer than the other). I think solid-state amps do better here than many of the tube amps – which are often all over the place w/r to harmonics.

// PURITY < - less .... more -> FIRST PASS at this list – there WILL BE CHANGES
VTL – ARC – McIntosh – BAT – CAT – Krell – Pass – Boulder – Soulution – FM Acoustics- Halcro – Vitus – Goldmund – Spectral – Sanders – Edge – Ayre – MBL

Harmonic Resolution: amount of subtleties in the harmonic – most real instruments, like a pluck on a guitar or striking of a piano, have lots of things going on besides the harmonic (and its fundamentals) at one single freq of the note.

From Wikipedia: “The untrained human ear typically does not perceive harmonics as separate notes. Instead, they are perceived as the timbre of the tone. Bells have more clearly perceptible partials than most instruments. Antique singing bowls are well known for their unique quality of producing multiple harmonic partials or multiphonics”

// HARMONIC RESOLUTION (detail) < - less .... more -> FIRST PASS at this list – there WILL BE CHANGES

OK. So what do you think?

AXPONA ANNOUNCES ITS SECOND ANNUAL HIGH PERFORMANCE AUDIO SHOW FOR SPRING 2011

AXPONA ANNOUNCES ITS SECOND ANNUAL HIGH PERFORMANCE AUDIO SHOW FOR SPRING 2011
Greetings!

DAYTONA BEACH — With just under five weeks before attendees come through
the doors of Jacksonville’s Wyndham Riverwalk Hotel for the first annual AXPONA High
Performance Audio Show, the show’s sponsor, Audio Expo of North America, has
announced the second event, scheduled for Spring, 2011.

Audio Expo, whose debut event will take place March 5-7, will showcase the latest-and-greatest in high performance home audio for an expected more than 4,000 enthusiasts from all over the country and around the world.

“When we decided to launch AXPONA, nearly a year ago, we felt there was a need
for this kind of show and we hoped it would succeed,” said Andrew Spaulding,
AXPONA president, “but we did not anticipate the tremendous enthusiasm from
exhibitors and the public that we found.” Many of our exhibitors, as well as those
who were unable to show this year, suggested that we make this an annual event,
Mr. Spaulding added.

The show’s early success has provided an unexpected opportunity, Mr. Spaulding
continued. “We’ve gotten the kind of buzz you really want,” he said. “The folks in
Jacksonville want us back – and we’ve been approached by some other cities, as
well. While I can’t tell you specifically where we’ll be next year, I can tell you
that the show will be in the Southeast in the spring.”

Audio Expo North America’s mission is to further the faithful reproduction of music.
Its outreach, by education and demonstration, is to dealers and consumers. It is
dedicated to the proposition that living with music is different and better than living without music. The organization’s first event, AXPONA, is scheduled for March 5-7,
2010. For further information, visit the AXPONA website: www.axpona.com
We would like to offer a very special thanks to Stereophile Magazine for all the efforts they have put forth and the media sponsorship they have provided. We look forward to next years event with hopes they will be as much a part as they are this year.

We want to thank the over 200 manufactures and suppliers as well as the dealers, distributors, and press that have been so instrumental in the future of this event. Attendees are already numbering in the thousands and it is hard to measure the level of appreciation we are feeling.
Sincerely,
Andrew Spaulding

1st Annual Capital Audiofest!

1st Annual
Capital Audiofest!

Welcome to the 2010 Capital Audiofest! WWW.Capitalaudiofest.com
The date for this unique event is set for June 11-13, 2010 at the historic Glenview Mansion located on the grounds of the Rockville Civic Center, 5 minutes from downtown Rockville, MD and approximately 10 miles north of Washington DC. The Glenview Mansion is a charming old world structure constructed in the 19th century and is surrounded by lovely parkland and well groomed grounds. The structure is well constructed with stone, brick, plaster, and old growth woods and has high ceilings and hardwood floors throughout. These qualities are near perfect for the reproduction of music and is already a favorite venue for local musical performances. We believe it to be an ideal setting to hold the first ever hi-fi audio show in the capital area. For more information on the room configurations, view the on-line floor plan www.rockvillemd.gov/glenview/ .

We plan to make this a casual fun-filled event for audiophiles, music lovers, collectors, hobbyists, DIYers, dealers and manufacturers and will have table space, booths and rooms available for rent. Families will also enjoy the beautiful setting and great food. The event is expected to attract those interested in vacuum tube and transistor audio equipment, analog and digital playback sources, buying and selling of LP records and CDs, and manufacturers of audio accessories. The event will be catered by high quality food and beverage vendors and plan to have live music performances from well known artists on one or two evenings. Last but not least we plan to offer an audio swap meet on Sunday morning. We hope to provide something of interest to all music lovers!
We hope you can join us for this exciting event!
