M10 is breaking in quickly… RMAF 2006 is approaching quicker still

Argh.

New and cold out of the box, played quietly, the Audio Note M10 linestage preamplifier was heavenly.

Several hours later, played loudly, there was a harshness / brightness to the upper mids (could have been the Meitner still wamrmng up… people (and you reviewers out there) do know that the Meitner takes about a day to warm up, right?)

The next day, no harshness, but a very tubey tube tube sound.

Today – sounds pretty good. With the purity of the Meitner / Emm Labs front end and the M10, the upper frequencies are very very lovely, the diamond tweeter approaching (and perhaps even supassing?) that of the Acapella plasma tweeters. It WAS very lovely and giggle-inducing.

Tomorrow – who knows.

Break-in darn it. BREAK-IN!

We are thinking about seeing if we can keep all of this plugged in somehow, and then making a mad dash to the show so that everything will only be off for a few hours, instead of the day or so that seems much more likely given that it all sits on and in front of the rack that we are taking.

The Marten Coltrane Supreme loudspeakers are in Denver in Customs. The drivers of the Supremes are broken in at the factory for several hundred hours, as are various other o fits pieces and parts. Cool huh? But we would be a lot happier if they had several months on them.

The important thing now is to get them into the room and just have them sit still for awhile (all that jostling during moves is not good for any component), acclimize to room temperature (it really helps things to sound better if its parts are not both cold and warm and hot at the same time), and get them playing music. And I do not want to argue why all these things are so, just like I do not want to argue why gravity works the way it does – it just does. I mean is.

These things just are. Try and figure out why, if you want to and have the time and expertise. But just don’t deny their existence because nobody can explain why they are indeed so to your satifaction.

Oh, and some of these things people measure, trying to be all ‘scientific’ and using equipment with lots of dials and acronyms instead of nouns. Well, you might as well just the weigh two pieces of equipment to determine which sounds better as to compare them with most of this pseudo-scientific BS. Just because electrons are juicier in one cable than another does not necessarily have anything to so with the quality and accuracy of the sound as enjoyed by a human being. They never prove this casual effect, one way of the other, between what they are trying to measure and the experience that we lay down the big bucks to enjoy. They just pontificate (or assume – and we all know what Felix had to say about ass-u-me-ing something:-)) it is so and awawaaaaaay they go.

Oops, I think that was a soap box. Get that thing out of here!

Anyone know if it Rocky Mountain AudioFest or Rocky Mountain Audiofest or Rocky Mountain Audio Fest… or Rocky Mount Audio Feast?

RMAF – Denver Rocky Mountain Audio Fest

15 more days.

We are spending a lot of time on the RMAF show preparations these days…

Deciding what furniture to have them take out of the room, and which to leave in

Making up a full page ad for the show directory (the booklet they hand out to attendees)

Getting our room posters made up that show the current list of product lines we carry… we added a few lately: Kharma, Elrod and Acoustic Zen (we love their Adagio speakers), and of course we lost Acapella.

Getting new business cards made up (we usually use the impetus of a show to update our business cards, if they need it).

Making up and printing out our handouts that we give everyone who comes to our room which describes each component we have in our system.

Focusing a lot at the gym on the muscles that are needed to Carry Heavy Equipment – especially those involved going up and down stairs.

Coordinating with everyone to get everything to show up on time for the show – things are looking positive lately on this front … (* W * H * E * W! *).

Creating the pages for our usual RMAF 2006 show report which are looking awfully empty right now…. The photo of the sunset was taken from our room at the show on I believe the evening of the last day of the show last year.

Drawing up the diagrams that show which components are going to go on which shelves of the equipment racks. We are taking our glossssssss black HRS ‘MXR’ rack, and HRS has graciously offered to send us out a loaner MXR rack, in silver (see pictures of a silver MXR in our photo rich HE 2006 show report).

And, of course, deciding which equipment to bring. 🙂 It is tempting to bring the whole store to the show…. but not very practical, unfortunately.

Its firming up a little bit. Mostly what is changing is which manufacturers and distributors are goijng to be able to make it. I think we added 2 and changed 1 since the last post was initially written (it has been updated since).

RMAF 2006 is coming right up…

The Rocky Mountain Audio Fest – the Denver High-end Audio Show – is coming in about a month, on October 20, 21, 22 2006.

We will of course be exhibiting at this show, as we have the last two years. Same room too, end of the hall on the ninth floor in the large suite: room 9030.

What is not ‘of course’ is what we will be showing – but we are PLANNING on showing the following:

* Marten Design Coltrane Supreme loudspeakers
* Audio Note U.K. Kegon amplifiers
* Audio Note U.K. M10 preamplifier
* Emm Labs DCC2 and CDSD Signature Editions CD / SACD player
* Brinkmann Audio Balance Turntable with Titan cartridge and Lamm LP2 phonostage
* HRS MXR equipment rack and assorted M3 Isolation Bases
* Nordost Valhalla interconnect (10 meter run from preamp to amplifiers)
* Jorma speaker cable
* Sunyata power cords

The rest of the equipment rackage and cabling is still TBD. We might also bring another digital source – but we are running into rack-space problems (the M10 is a 3-box preamplifier).

Question: How many billions of hours have audiophiles spent trying to figure out how to place all their components on the seemingly always too few shelves of their equipment rack?

In attendance, besides Neli and I and Steve, local customer and invaluable assistant, will be:

* Dan Meinwald – Importer for Marten Design and Jorma Design
* Laurence Blair III – Importer for Brinkmann Audio
* Leif Olofsson – Marten Design
* Jorma Koski – Jorma Design
* Peter Qvortrup – Audio Note U.K. (next door in the Audio Note / Audio Federation room, room 9026)
* Mike Latvis – HRS (Harmonic Resolution systems)
* Steven Norber – Edge Electronics

If, for some reason the Supremes do not get here in time, we will exhibit with the Marten Design Coltrane loudspeakers.

If for some reason those are also not available, i.e. they get sold, we would probably exhibit with the SoundLab U1 loudspeakers.

If the SoundLab upgrade has not come back from the factory by then, we would then exhibit with either the Kharma Mini Exquisites or Audio Note U.K. loudspeakers (or most likely BOTH).

Which is OK, as these speakers both sound as good as the others – they just do not fill a room that size quite as easily – and, you know it is true, many people go to shows to be WOW’d, and not so much to hear great sound (we try to give them both 🙂

The above is subject to change, of course. For example, we will probably take a backup amp : either the EDGE Signature One or Lamm ML2.1 – or both if everybody but me (who has to carry these down the 45 steps… and back up again after the show) gets their way. :-O
