Some semblance of normality

The shop is back to halfway operational now… finally … after CES 2015. And after both of us getting sick…. *cough* *cough cough* *SNEEZE!* … and now mostly recovered.

Since we took the HRS SXR rack to CES, and there was nothing sitting between the massive EMM Labs MTRX amps all of a sudden… we took then opportunity to move the larger HRS MXR rack up front.

This gives us 4 shelves instead of the 3 we have on our  SXR.

Room for… the  famous 2-box M9 Phono audio Note pre-amplifier. The Audio Note CDT-Five transport. And the Audio Note DAC 5 Signature DAC.

So… level Five, one step below the top-of-the-line Audio Note into the killer EMM  Labs MTRX 750 watt drives-the-poop-out-the-speakers amp into  the Acapella  Atlas hyperspherical-horn speakers.

So, now, everybody expects me to write about how it sounds. Neli wants me to tell everybody about what it sounds like.

You know, this thing we do in high-end audio…  where we change something in the hifi system and the sound changes and we evaluate the differences,  hopefully enjoying the differences…?

We do this a  lot. Most of you do this a lot.

The sound after we change something – it does not have to be all that much better. Just different. It is quite entertaining for it to be just different.

It can be…  well, let’s face it: it is  ALWAYS thrilling when the change makes the sound way better.

But it is also ALWAYS entertaining when the change is just a change.

And this change for the sake of change is what drives a large percentage of the industry, especially the used marketplace.

And it provides for seemingly endless fun here at Audio Federation as well.

CH-CH-CH-CHANGES

Changing RCA interconnects out for XLR (or visa-versa).

Maybe the component likes XLR better?

Maybe one component handles ground differently than the other?

Maybe the XLR part of the circuit is not broken in yet?

Maybe the better connectors on one  versus the other is  making all the difference?

Maybe that extra 3dB of the XLR is doing some good?

Perhaps the RCA is better shielded and the  XLR is getting too close to a transformer?

Maybe it is better to put the superior interconnect on the Source as opposed to the Amplifier?

….

Or maybe not.

Let’s try it and see!

Sometime I will try and write an exhaustive list of these things to play with and try in our systems.

[But for now… for this post… today… Sorry, I just couldn’t bring myself to write another description of yet another awesome sound of this what is becoming a very good-sounding system. Hope you enjoyed this non-post :-)].

ACAPELLA AUDIO ARTS, Audio Federation: CES 2015

The ACAPELLA AUDIO ARTS, Audio Federation room at CES 2015. 21 photos.

This was our room.

Acapella Cellini speakers and LaMusika integrated amplifier, speaker cables and power cord.

Audio Note U.K. CDT-Five transport and DAC 5 Signature DAC and ‘brown’ PALLAS interconnect [acting as a digital interconnect].

NVS SOUND Silver Inspire power cord. Nordost Odin power cord.

Harmonic Resolution Systems (HRS) SXR rack, M3X Isolation Bases, and Nimbus Couplers.

I was really, really happy with the sound… about 5 minutes after close on the last day [I know. It is such a cliche. We hung out and played the system for a few hours after closing]. Neli and Hermann significantly improved the sound day to day, moving the speakers around a bit, changing cables a bit [the above list is the final configuration]. The Cellini speakers had about 10 hours on them. The DAC 5 Sig was brand spanking new. Yadayadayada [ same ole same ole 🙂 ]

Thanks to Jim for loaning us all his amp [the original LaMusika amp slated for this room was delayed in shipping for a day]. Thanks to Robert Lee [Acoustic Zen] and Santy [Twin Audio Video /  Triode Corp] for lugging it to the show. Thanks to Peter Qvortrup [Audio Note] for loaning us the CDT-5 and DAC 5 Signature. Thanks to Nathan Vander Stoep [NVS Sound] for loaning us the power cable.

And thanks to everyone who stopped by!

See you all at Newport! [and hopefully at Munich before that…]

CES 2015: Acapella / Audio Federation room setup

The CES 2015: Acapella / Audio Federation room setup consists of a pair of Acapella Cellini speakers with red horns [standard $40,600, high version $56K using today’s historical (9-year) low Euro to USD conversion rate] and Acapella LaMusika integrated amplifier (starting at $91K. As shown: $102K)

So here we are, Sunday, room 30-225 in the Venetian Tower. Putting the HRS SXR rack in place ($5K, $13,680 fully loaded with M3x Isolation Bases). Leveling it [Neli likes doing this. Mike does not :-)]. Centering it. [And deciding whether to center it within the room, center it w/r to the center of the window, or some compromise, like centered between the speakers which may not be equidistant between the walls given that gigantico hutch there on the right side. Making sure the rack is far enough from the wall for the large Acapella LaMusika amp’s power cords have some space.

Anybody else notice the new carpet this year? Whoo Hoo! :-/

Added the Audio Note DAC 5 Signature ($98,250) up on the HRS Nimbus/Coupler footers (about $350 for a set of 3) and HRS M3X Isolation Base (about $2,800 in this 19×21 inch configuration).

IMG_0821-ces-2015-acapella-room-3

Added the Audio Note CDT-Five Transport ($54,000).

Initial configuration is a Nordost Odin power cord ($11K) on the transport, a NVS Sound Silver Inspire power cord ($5430) on the DAC, an Audio Note ‘Brown’ PALLAS interconnect ($2428) between the two acting as a digital cable, and Acapella interconnect and speaker cables ($varies) on the amp and speakers.
