Horning, Sound Applications, Silent Running Audio (SRA), Finite Elemente room

Horning speakers, Sound Applications power, Silent Running Audio vibration control platform, Finite Elemente equipment rack

This system had good soundstaging and separation, and not much compression or congestion at all in the midrange. Hate to start off with such audiophile-ish analysis, but so few rooms at the show had any of these attributes of what, to this listener, contributes to the suspension of disbelief, that it becomes necessary to point out the rooms that actually make it to the 'and how did it sound' stage.

This system had a 'boxiness' to the upper bass (not necessarily attributable to the speaker, as Mr. Fremer has wisely pointed out to us in the past), and the bass was kind of detached, and did not go down very low and did not have very much resolution. There was a little less body and harmonic richness to the midrange than I normally prefer, and note decay was slightly faster than what I expected, but this did add a Nordost-like clarity and cleanliness to the sound that I also am partial to.

This system sounded pretty good in the midrange and those that gravitate to systems that do midrange well and put the other frequencies in a 'lower priority' bucket would like this system.

I guess the reason I did not pick this system as one of the 'best' is because, these days, I really like top-to-bottom consistency, and am willing to sacrifice a little of the quality of the sound from all the frequencies, favoring none, as opposed to having a few great frequencies at the expense of significant portions the rest. To each their own.
