Hi George,

I am not sure what having windows in our room has to do with the kind of cables we use, per se... but it has been awhile since we have talked here about our eschewing the 'padded cell' approach to listening rooms and preference for the 'overall aesthetic of the experience'. We do not play music above 95 - 100 db all that often and the shape of the room and the beams helps keeps things under control until around 110dB.

But back to the cable thing.

To our ears the quote ANALOG unquote cables sounded best. And it wasn't by a small amount, either.

Yeah, we've heard of impedance and capacitance and inductance - being in the ECAD business for about 25 years. What ECAD does is allow electrical engineers to design circuits and simulate them. They are able to simulate them because of the work that has been done over the years on models that try and describe what happens in various different components and traces in a circuit. I guess that these circuit models, if any such exist out there, for simulating/predicting the performance of cables based solely on impedance, between a transport and DAC... well, they suck. It is not as if we as a species are all investing millions of $$$ into coming up with good models for 'DIGITAL' cables.

So, we just do our predicting the old fashioned way. We listen.

Try replacing some 'DIGITAL' cables with some 'ANALOG' cables sometime. Then you might end up being kind of peeved, like we are, at getting an inferior sound all these years, when we had / have these better sounding cables just lying around. Well, the ODIN, PALLAS and JORMA PRIME are never 'sitting' around - but you all get the idea.

And it is true, and as a caveat, these tests we ran were between an Audio Note transport and DAC. Using analog cables between different brands of components may have different results. Here, the other transport we have is the Meitner which prefers optical (or AES/EBU) - so we are unable to test, at the current moment, on other brands of equipment.

Thanks,
Mike

Dear friends:

Why in the 100 years would you use ANALOG cables as DIGITAL links in the room with untreated glass?? Have you heard of impedance and other "important" things for digital links? RCA Digital cable without 75 ohm impedance and AES/EBU without 110 ohm impedance are useless.......
I am surprised these cables even sounded half way decent at all. I am stunned you wasted so much time listening and typing.

regards,
